2017: Leading Decisively

Leadership involves making decisions every day. We will be bringing you a conference full of thinkers and educators who can take you to the next level in your own decision-making: using information, driven by your own goals, given the pressures of things like legislation, and even about how you want to live your life.

Join us in scenic Cooperstown, NY at the wonderful Otesaga Resort Hotel. We will have all housing and conference sessions at the site. Bring family and come early or stay an extra night to enhance this important opportunity to advance your own career in higher education.

Our keynote speaker will be the Chancellor of the State University of New York, Nancy Zimpher.

The conference will be April 7, 2017, with a networking reception and dinner the evening before, on April 6.

Keynote Speaker:

Sarah Angel-Johnson

Chief PMO Executive (Interim) & Chief Alumnae Officer Girl Scouts of America

“Moving the Needle: Leading by Influence”

In 2014, Sarah made a significant career change from IBM executive to revolutionizing the iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program—taking it digital! In her role as chief Digital Cookie executive for Girl Scouts of the USA, she launched our national digital girl-experience platform with a pilot including 117,000 girls selling almost 1 million boxes of cookies, to teach girls valuable e-commerce entrepreneurial skills. The pilot garnered 4 billion media impressions and recognitions including a spot in Fast Company’s Top 10 Most Innovative Non-Profits list. In addition, Sarah stood up Girl Scouts of the USA’s Project Management Office to consistently plan, execute, and achieve significant strategic initiatives for the Girl Scout Movement. Following that success, she was named Girl Scouts’ first chief alumnae officer, charged with harnessing the power of 59 million former Girl Scouts.

In addition to her career, Sarah is passionate about giving back to the community and was honored with a US Congressional Award for her work with youth. She has served on multiple boards of directors, including two Girl Scout councils. She is also an active entrepreneur, owning a performing arts coffeehouse, founding a nonprofit for starting professionals, and establishing a salsa dance studio after retiring from being a professional salsa dancer. Additionally, she teaches organizational behavior at various colleges.

In addition we will be repeating our popular Speed Mentoring with Presidents in the afternoon, following on our annual PANEL OF PRESIDENTS in the morning!

Donna Shavlik Award

The ACE’s Donna Shavlik Award honors an individual whose leadership demonstrates a sustained commitment to advancing women in higher education through actions or initiatives enhancing women’s leadership and career development, campus climate, and mentoring of women at both the state and national levels. We’re pleased that this year Susan Perry, the 2011 recipient of the Donna Shavlik Award, joins our conference as our keynote speaker. Throughout her career she has mentored, supported, and encouraged the careers of many women in higher education. In every position she has ever held, she has been a change agent, innovating with every tool at her disposal to improve higher education. We’re delighted to have her kick off our day of thinking about leading in the 21st century.

Susan Perry (in photo, left, with Jamilla Jabari) has been an information services professional since 1964. During her career she has served as the dean of libraries and media services at The Evergreen State College; chief librarian of the J. Henry Meyer Memorial Library at Stanford University; director of the departmental systems group at the Stanford University Data Center; and CIO and college librarian at Mount Holyoke College.  For ten years, she served as a senior advisor on libraries and information services to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. During that time, she was a consultant to NITLE; staff to and then Dean of the Frye Leadership Institute; and Interim Director of CLIR. She also helped to build a consortium for the 23 US accredited American Universities Abroad, AMICAL.

Perry currently serves on the Board of Visitors of UNC’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS), and in 2005 she received the UNC SILS Distinguished Alumni Award.
